ĚÇĐÄVlog receives $389,400 from the Ohio Department of Higher Education for continued support computer science endorsement for educators /malone-university-receives-389400-from-the-ohio-department-of-higher-education-for-continued-support-computer-science-endorsement-for-educators/ Tue, 28 Apr 2026 13:30:52 +0000 /?p=44378 Teach CS 2.0 grants, a workforce development initiative under the Ohio Department of Higher Education (ODHE), delivers licensure preparation within the Ohio STEM Learning Network (OSLN)’s computer science portfolio so that teachers can gain supplemental licensure to teach computer science courses.

“The demand for tech skills is increasing daily and more students are seeking computer science classes to prepare them for the future. However, we can’t offer more computer science classes without preparing a larger pool of qualified teachers who can help them earn these in-demand skills,” said Senator Jon Husted when the program first launched in 2024. “To help meet the demand for more computer science teachers, we are removing barriers by covering the costs of coursework, materials, and exams for teachers who want to teach computer science in Ohio’s K-12 classrooms so they can better educate Ohio’s future workforce.”

Malone’s computer science endorsement can be added to any existing teaching license and allows teachers to utilize their current classroom students for practicum objectives. Courses are eight weeks long and the program can be completed online in less than ten months. Additionally, those who complete the program will receive a $1,200 stipend in addition to full tuition coverage and books.

“In the evolving intersection of technology and education, Ohio urgently needs computer science teachers,” said Jennifer Webb, Ph.D., chair of the education department at Malone. “Our computer science faculty go beyond being mere content experts; they’re dedicated mentors who guide students to master code, form deep connections, and apply content to their K-12 classrooms. This relational approach sets Malone apart, producing educators who not only teach computer science but inspire students to impact the world.”

Beneficial for established educators and newly licensed teachers alike, Malone’s computer science endorsement will also help them prepare to meet Ohio’s K-12 updated standards for teacher training and provide an additional resource for districts as they meet evolving licensure requirements.

“There has never been a better time to pursue a computer science endorsement than now,” said Blaise Brankatelli, director of graduate & professional admissions and external partnerships. “Not only does this endorsement provide a skill set in high demand, but with this support from the Ohio Department of Higher Education, Malone will be able to offer this endorsement as a 100% funded program for this summer’s incoming cohort.”

2026 Distinguished Faculty Award Recipients Honored /2026-distinguished-faculty-award-recipients-honored/ Mon, 23 Mar 2026 13:54:36 +0000 /?p=43466 Each year, faculty members are honored for their commitments to teaching, service, and adjunct teaching as a result of nomination by students, faculty, and administration.

Distinguished Faculty Award for Service: Brandi Noll, Ph.D.

“Dr. Noll exemplifies a servant’s heart through her leadership and commitment to others. She leads the education honorary Kappa Delta Pi and the Outdoors Club—revitalizing the latter—and launched a “teacher supply cupboard” to support alumni beginning their PK–12 classrooms.

Beyond campus, she serves her community as a member of the Canton Local School Board (2024–2027) and remains deeply invested in her church, First Christian Church of Malvern. Known for her accessibility, compassion, and dedication to teacher candidates, Dr. Noll’s impact extends well beyond the classroom, including leading a service-learning trip during Malone’s spring break in 2025.”

Distinguished Faculty Award for Adjunct Teaching: Lori Kiefer-Davila, M.Ed.

“Ms. Davila has pushed me and my classmates in ways I didn’t know possible. She helped me pass the hardest teaching test there is, has shaped me as both a student and teacher, and truly wants the best for us and goes the extra mile. She is tough on us because she knows we can go farther. She teaches with excellence and cultivates the heart and mind.  I have never had a teacher like her who has pushed me past the glass ceiling I created for myself.”

Distinguished Faculty Award for Teaching: Cherie Parsons, Ph.D.

“Dr. Cherie Parsons, is an accomplished teacher, scholar, and mentor at Malone and a deserving candidate for the Distinguished Faculty Award for teaching. She has faithfully taught GEN 100: The College Experience and GEN 460: Grief and Loss, and is a valued colleague whose commitment to students is evident, even in her regular travel from Columbus to serve the Malone community.

She challenges students to high standards with a spirit of love and laughter, creating classes that are both engaging and deeply impactful.”

Malone equips students for the future with enhanced career readiness opportunities /malone-equips-students-for-the-future-with-enhanced-career-readiness-opportunities/ Wed, 29 Oct 2025 20:14:32 +0000 /?p=39739 “As we develop and launch new programs, we are intentionally responding to marketplace demands in ways that intersect with our distinct Christian mission,” said Christina Schnyders, Ph.D., LPCC-S, provost. “These programs embody our commitment to prepare graduates who are equipped and empowered to serve the church, community, and world.”

These programs include:

Accelerated BSN

The accelerated bachelor of science in nursing track allows qualified students to complete the degree in as few as five semesters. The program maintains the same rigorous curriculum as Malone’s traditional track, while offering direct admission, strong support services, early access to clinicals, and an outstanding record of NCLEX pass rates.

Criminal and Restorative Justice + Akron Law 3+3 program:

Start law school sooner with the Criminal and Restorative Justice + Akron Law 3+3 program! In this pathway, students complete their major and general education in three years, then transition to the University of Akron School of Law during year four. This option allows students to finish their bachelor’s degree while beginning their JD—saving both time and tuition, and preparing them to make a meaningful impact through justice and restoration.

Entrepreneurship

The entrepreneurship major prepares ethical leaders to lead with integrity and innovation to positively impact Christ’s Kingdom. The curriculum emphasizes creativity, resource stewardship, and ethical decision-making, equipping graduates for leadership roles in tracks such as small business, technology, and church planting.

Environmental Science

This environmental science program prepares students to address today’s environmental challenges through a combination of scientific study, policy training, and ethical reflection. With hands-on learning in local ecosystems, internships, and field research, students gain practical experience alongside their coursework. Graduates are equipped for careers in areas such as wildlife biology, environmental consulting, sustainability, or education.

Mandarin Practical Ministry Certificate

Now offered fully online in Mandarin, the practical ministry certificate is a 18-month certificate program that equips individuals who feel called to ministry with practical skills and hands-on experience via courses and internships. It includes nine courses plus internships, and meets the educational requirements for ordination in the Evangelical Friends Church — Eastern Region. Designed to be affordable and accessible, it’s ideal for those starting in ministry, shifting into a ministry role, or wanting formal preparation for service in a variety of ministry settings.

Welding

Malone’s hybrid B.A. in business administration with a concentration in the trades (welding) offers a unique educational pathway integrating hands-on vocational training with a comprehensive liberal arts education (including an opportunity to participate in NCAA Div II athletics if the student so chooses). Developed in collaboration with regional industry partners, this program prepares students for immediate employment in manufacturing and construction sectors, covering roles such as fabrication, welding, inspection, repair, and management. Additionally, the curriculum incorporates preparation for The American Welding Society certification, equipping graduates with both technical skills and ethical business acumen to excel in the trades industry.

Young Alumna of the Year: Megan Mauck ĘĽ16

After earning her degree in business administration from Malone, Megan went on to serve for seven years in the Alumni Relations office, first as assistant director and later as director. During her tenure, she launched creative initiatives such as the first student-alumni service-learning trip to England and expanded engagement opportunities in Washington, D.C. She also helped establish the Athletic Hall of Fame breakfast as part of Homecoming. In addition, Megan has taught both GEN 100 and hospitality courses, led spiritual formation opportunities, and partnered with Student Development to encourage students in remaining connected to Malone after graduation. As a student, she was a resident assistant in Fox Hall, worked in Admissions and Student Development, and loved participating in traditions like Airband and Res Hall Palooza. Today, Megan works at Carolyn Valentine Co., Inc., serves at Grace Church Medina East Campus, and enjoys hosting, camping, traveling, and time with friends. She resides in Barberton.

Alumnus of the Year: David Yakley ĘĽ95

David Yakley ’95 has served ĚÇĐÄVlog since 1999 as creative director in the Office of University Relations. In this role, he has designed countless publications—including the award-winning Malone Magazine—as well as recruiting and fundraising materials, branding, campus signage, and communications for nearly every department. His work has spanned across numerous historic moments such as three presidential inaugurations, the University name change, the 125th anniversary celebration, three website redesigns, and the 2005 devotional book A Gathered Stillness. David has also taught courses in graphic design and communication, served on Staff Council and the Athletics Hall of Fame committee, and has been the basketball scorekeeper for more than 20 years. He co-led service trips to South Dakota and Jamaica, combining creativity and service.

As a student, David majored in Communications Comprehensive–now Integrated Language Arts, graduating magna cum laude. He served as Aviso editor, and sang in Chorale for five years. He later earned his M.A. in Publications Design from the University of Baltimore, where his team received the Phillips Award for new media. Nationally, David represented Malone on the UCDA Board of Directors for a decade and received the prestigious UCDA Award in 2022. He remains active in local service and his home church in Sugarcreek.

Graduate Program Alumna of the Year: Patricia Sommer ĘĽ19 ĘĽ24

Tricia serves as ĚÇĐÄVlog’s associate registrar, where her expertise in technology, planning, and data analysis has strengthened systems that support students, faculty, and staff. A gifted problem-solver, she has enhanced processes in the College Credit Plus program and streamlined office operations by mastering and implementing new technologies. Beyond her technical skills, Tricia is known for her warmth and ability to connect personally with students, helping them navigate requirements and stay on track toward graduation.

A two-time Malone graduate, she earned a B.A. in organizational management and an MBA with a concentration in data analytics, balancing her studies with work and family responsibilities. She was inducted into Alpha Sigma Lambda and honored as the outstanding graduate of the 2023–2024 MBA cohort.

Deeply committed to Malone’s mission, Tricia also invests in her community through Mt. Zion Country Church and local youth sports. She and her family reside in Carrollton.

Pioneer Pinnacle Award: Eric Lund ĘĽ91

The Pioneer Pinnacle Award is presented to individuals or groups that have made a difference at Malone through their service, involvement, and support. Award winners have shown a desire to help Malone empower students to seek “Christ’s Kingdom First” both in their vocation and in their daily lives. They have adopted a mindset of service to God and to others, and have given their time, talent, and treasure to ĚÇĐÄVlog.

Eric Lund was chosen as this year’s recipient for his entrepreneurial thinking that continues to benefit his alma mater.

A native of Boardman, Eric received a bachelor of arts degree from Malone with concentrations in business, communications, and biology. During his senior year, he served as president of the student body and was a writer for the Aviso

In 1997, he founded MedSource, a full-service clinical research organization specializing in oncology. ĚÇĐÄVlog and Schneller partner for Learn and Earn initiative /malone-university-and-schneller-partner-for-learn-and-earn-initiative/ Tue, 23 Sep 2025 16:40:16 +0000 /?p=38889 Headquartered in Kent, Ohio, Schneller is recognized worldwide for its innovation in custom design, durability, and performance. Through this partnership, students in Malone’s Health and Natural Sciences division, particularly those studying chemistry, will gain hands-on experience in the industrial applications of chemistry. By working alongside professionals at Schneller, students will see firsthand how their academic training translates into solutions that impact global industries.

The Learn & Earn initiative is designed to connect Malone students with organizations across northeast Ohio, giving them opportunities to apply classroom learning, develop workforce readiness, and contribute meaningfully to their communities. Through this collaboration, Schneller gains access to motivated, well-prepared students while Malone students gain the advantage of practical experience in a world-class facility.

“ĚÇĐÄVlog is committed to developing the next generation of talent in science and technology,” said Blaise Brankatelli, director of external partnerships at Malone. “This partnership with Schneller gives our chemistry students invaluable exposure to industrial practices in advanced manufacturing, showing them the many doors their education can open. Together, we are preparing Pioneers not just for successful careers, but for impactful contributions to science, industry, and society.”

While the Learn & Earn partnership with Schneller most directly benefits chemistry majors, students from other Health and Natural Sciences programs who have a strong chemistry base will also have opportunities to engage in this experiential learning model.

Tyler McClellan ĘĽ26 awarded Ohio School Counselor Association Scholarship  /tyler-mcclellan-%ca%bc26-awarded-ohio-school-counselor-association-scholarship/ Fri, 11 Jul 2025 13:12:38 +0000 /?p=36870 According to the Ohio School Counselor Association (OSCA), this scholarship is awarded to further the education of deserving school counseling graduate students. In order to qualify, applicants not only need to meet the application requirements, but they also provide a professional letter of support written by an academic adviser or professor and submit an essay in response to the question, “How do school counselors utilize leadership, advocacy, and collaboration to effect systemic change in schools to maximize student success?” McClellan’s application stood out as one of the top three to receive the $1,000 reward for the 2025-2026 academic year.

“My experience in the counseling program at Malone has been awesome, challenging, and rewarding in every way,” said McClellan. “My professors have been incredibly supportive and encouraging during times where coursework is very demanding. To be selected as one of the OSCA scholarship recipients is a huge honor and blessing as they are here to support graduate students like me who are working towards their master’s degree in school counseling. I am very grateful to be on the receiving end of this support.”

McClellan’s gratitude for the recognition and the support he’s received throughout his graduate studies is shared by faculty who have observed his dedication and compassion firsthand. It is a true testament to the support professors bring in preparing students to serve the Church, community, and world with their God-given talents and skills.

“Tyler’s love and compassion for young people was one of the very first things I learned about him,” said Natalie Thornberry, Ph.D., director of graduate programs in counseling in her letter of support. “His desire to help others through his work in multiple roles in schools, and as a future school counselor, radiates through his coursework, his responses to peers, and his interactions with me and other faculty. He clearly demonstrates a desire and strong ability to absorb material intentionally, thoughtfully produce assignments and documentation, openly accept feedback and critique, and confidently seek out consultation from others when needed. Tyler has a strong will to be successful, and that desire spills over into all areas of his life, leading him to be a servant who wants to encourage others toward success.”

That commitment to service and growth has not only shaped how faculty view McClellan, but also continues to guide his own professional goals. Inspired by his experiences and the support he’s received, McClellan looks ahead with purpose and passion for the role he hopes to play in the lives of students and communities.
“I am thrilled to one day be someone who the community will come to for help and guidance,” McClellan said. “I am at my best when I am in a position to serve others, and the role of a school counselor is exactly that. Wherever I land after graduation, I am ready to be part of a team and make a difference.”
