The West Coast style tattoo machine can be used for outlining, shading or coloring. It is an excellent all-around machine for both fast and slow speeds, but was originally designed to be used at faster speeds with a longer stroke. The shape of the frame is the same for either outlining or shading. The gap is the determining factor for the use of the machine.
